Aid for earthquake victims in Nepal
First aid, reconstruction and disaster preparednessThe earthquakes of 25 April and 12 May 2015, with magnitudes of 7.9 and 7.4, are regarded as the deadliest disaster in Nepal's history. According to the government, around 9,000 people died as a result of the quakes and some 22,300 were injured. 600,000 houses lay in ruins across the country. In Gorkha and Sindhupalchok, the epicentres of the quakes, nearly 90 per cent of the infrastructure and homes were destroyed.

Since the two major earthquakes of 2015, Welthungerhilfe has reached almost 200,000 people with emergency relief measures. These include the distribution of food, medical care, water supplies and the provision of emergency shelter. In the long term, Welthungerhilfe is organising sustainable projects to improve the food situation and disaster protection.
Progress despite many obstacles
Lengthy bureaucratic processes meant that reconstruction could only begin very slowly. This was compounded by the fact that the state National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) developed new building regulations for earthquake-proof houses very late and issued no permits before that.
But things are improving. The state is increasingly employing engineers and investing in training programmes for bricklayers and carpenters. In addition, international aid organisations can now contribute their funds directly to rebuilding houses.
