As a Grünwelt Energie customer, we offset the CO₂ emissions associated with your natural-gas consumption and thereby make a meaningful contribution to climate protection.

Wherever you use natural gas at home, whether for heating or cooking, CO₂ is released. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent that. At Grünwelt, however, we want to contribute to climate protection and offset those CO₂ emissions elsewhere through investments in climate-protection projects.

What does offsetting CO₂ emissions mean?

All CO₂ emissions generated by our customers through gas combustion must be offset by reducing CO₂ somewhere else. This keeps greenhouse-gas emissions globally neutral overall. CO₂ reductions are achieved through climate-protection projects, for example projects involving sustainable energy generation with biomass, wind, or hydropower, or reforestation efforts. The amount of CO₂ saved there is determined by independent, recognized auditors and recorded in national or international registers. By investing in these projects, portions of the saved CO₂ volumes can be acquired and used for offsetting.

Our climate-protection projects

To offset the CO₂ emissions of our customers, we invest specifically in selected projects that have avoided climate-damaging emissions and are therefore available for offsetting. In recent years, we have acquired CO₂ reductions from the following climate-protection projects.

Calculation of released CO2 emissions

Determining gas quantities:

The total amount of natural gas sold is converted into energy quantities in kWh. An emission factor is used to calculate CO2 emissions. This factor indicates how much CO2 is released per unit of energy. According to the Allocation Ordinance 2020 (ZuV 2020), section 2 para. 29 c), the emission factor for natural gas (H & L) is 201.6 g CO2/kWh. This means that 201.6 g of CO2 are released per kWh of energy generated by natural gas.

Calculating emissions:

The calculated energy quantity in kWh is multiplied by the corresponding emission factor (201.6 g CO2/kWh). The result is then multiplied by the conversion factor 0.903, because the final calorific value corresponds to only 90.3% of the nominal heating value of natural gas. The result is divided by 1,000,000 to determine CO2 emissions in tonnes.
