How the funding works

The resources of the Girls' Fund finance projects that aim to give girls an equal start in life. These include projects to protect them from sexual violence and exploitation, for girls' education and for their equal participation in decision-making processes. Young women and girls are empowered so that they can campaign effectively for their concerns and their rights. The goal: 100 million girls can learn, lead, decide and realise their full potential. Since 2003, the Girls' Fund has made an important contribution to eliminating disadvantage, poverty and violence.

Example: Africa

For the first time, more people live in cities than in the countryside. Large cities offer girls and young women many advantages, such as better opportunities for education or a job. At the same time, various factors prevent women and girls from taking an active part in political, social and economic life. These include traditional role assignments, but also sexual harassment, violence and a lack of safety on public transport.

With the project “Girls Lead – Safe Cities for Girls”, carried out in the Egyptian cities of Alexandria and Asyut, we want to change social norms that prevent young people, and girls in particular, from exercising their rights. The aim is to promote equality and make the city a safer place to live: girls should be able to move freely in their neighbourhoods, use public transport without fear of harassment and spend time safely in public spaces such as markets or parks.
