In crisis and disaster areas in particular, women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty, insecurity and exclusion. CARE supports them with targeted relief measures, protection services, hygiene and health care as well as programmes that build leadership and participation skills. With the “Women Lead in Emergencies” approach, women are also empowered to take on responsibility in their communities and to help shape relief measures themselves.

One particular focus of the funding is health care for women who are fleeing. Among other things, funds are used for relief projects in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There, CARE improves access to medical care for pregnant women and young mothers who, because of conflict and displacement, often have only limited access to vital health services. By supporting health stations, risks for mother and child are reduced and health care is strengthened in the long term.

The funding also helps to create greater gender equality in the long run, to strengthen women's economic independence and to promote sustainable development in their communities. Because when women and girls are given better prospects, entire families and societies benefit.
