Support for emergency medical aidMÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES provides emergency medical aid when, for example, a measles epidemic threatens the lives of thousands of children, as in Chad. There, together with the Chadian health authorities, the organisation was able to vaccinate more than 200,000 children against measles.

Example project: Chad
A measles epidemic has been continuing in large parts of Chad for more than a year. To prevent it from spreading, 95 per cent of children must be vaccinated – in Chad, however, only 37 per cent of the under-fives are. In combination with malnutrition in particular, measles can be life-threatening. An emergency team from MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES treated measles patients in the Am Timan region. The organisation also launched several large-scale vaccination campaigns together with Chad's ministry of health. More than 200,000 children were vaccinated against measles in order to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Almost two million people in South Sudan are displaced. Fighting and violence forced them to leave their homes. Recently there were devastating floods caused by persistent rainfall. MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES provides comprehensive emergency aid across the country and brings medical care to many places where there would otherwise be none. Among other things, the teams care for malnourished children, treat malaria patients, assist births and fight epidemics. Every year, MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES carries out more than one million medical consultations in South Sudan.
